It’s good to build the reading habit

— “October 1964” by David Halberstam.

— “The Woman Who Fell From the Sky: An American Journalist in Yemen” by Jennifer Steil.

— “The Wanderer’s Necklace” by Henry R. Haggard.

— “Do The Work” by Steven Pressfield.

— “Mt. Vernon Love Story” by Mary Higgins-Clark.

— “Noah’s Compass” by Anne Tyler.

— “Decision Points” by George W. Bush.

Those seven books are being read this week by the five members of the H-T editorial board. We share this in the spirit of Bloomington Reads, this week’s series of activities designed to highlight literacy.

“Nothing defines the success of a child better than the ability to read and to read well,” said Tina Peterson, executive director of the Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools, a leader of Bloomington Reads.

This emphasis on literacy is needed considering about one in three MCCSC students can’t read at grade level by third grade — a handicap from which they may never recover. Your participation in Bloomington Reads would help, even if it’s just a conversation with a young person about what they — or you — are reading.
