Scholarships

The Foundation of Monroe County Community Schools manages and administers 36 scholarships and awards to support a variety of educational opportunities for high school students. For information on establishing a scholarship or award, please contact the Foundation at 330-7700.

The deadline for scholarship applications is April 1st, 2012 @ 5:00 p.m.

NEW: The Bloomington Watercolor Society Scholarship- $300

Any MCCSC High School Graduate

The NEW Bloomington Watercolor Society scholarship will be awarded annually to one MCCSC high school senior who is pursuing a degree in visual fine arts, arts education, architecture or design from an accredited college, university, or school of design. The recipient must graduate from an MCCSC high school with a minimum 3.0 GPA before July 1. The scholarship award of $300 will be paid to the student for the purpose of purchasing art supplied. The student will also have the opportunity to have a solo exhibit in a local gallery with the assistance of the Bloomington Watercolor Society.

NEW: Harrell-Fish Scholarship – $1,000

Bloomington HS South

The NEW Harrel-Fish Scholarship will be awarded to one South senior every year. The recipient should be a current South senior with the intent of attending Purdue University to pursue a degree from the School of Engineering or School of Technology.

The Isaiah Stroup Memorial Scholarship -$330

Any MCCSC High School Graduate

This scholarship is awarded annually to a senior graduating from any MCCSC high school program.  Applicants should have satisfied all requirements for graduation, be in good academic standing, and exhibited a commitment to community and to school engagement throughout their high school careers.

The Elena T. Veach Memorial Scholarship – $780

Any MCCSC High School Graduate

This scholarship is awarded annually to an MCCSC high school senior pursuing a post-secondary course of study at Butler University.  Applicants should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and possess a strong work ethic, the respect of their peers, and a commitment to community and school involvement.

The Gregory L. Mongold Math Scholarship-  $2,000 (2 awarded, 1 from BHSS and 1 from BHSN)

Bloomington HS North & South

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating MCCSC senior interested in pursuing a post-secondary course of study in a math related field. This award was established to honor the passion Greg Mongold had for math and education. The recipient is chosen based on their academic success and financial need. One recipient is chosen from both North and South High Schools.

The Fred Simic Memorial Scholarship – $490

Bloomington High School North

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating North student interested in pursuing a post-secondary course of study in a health care related field. This award was established by the family of Fred Simic to honor those health care professionals who assisted them during their hard times. Recipients should demonstrate academic success, community involvement and financial need.

LeAnna Beth Anderson Memorial Scholarship – $320
Hoosier Hills Career Center

Available annually to a graduating Hoosier Hills student who will be enrolling in an advanced educational or training program next school year. The recipient must have a minimum grade average of C and is chosen on the basis of financial need and academic performance.

Business and Professional Women’s Club Award -$280
Bloomington HS North & South

Presented annually at both North and South to a graduating female based upon scholastic ability and dedication to the business/commercial field. Preference is given to a student planning to enroll in IU/Bloomington or Ivy Tech Bloomington.

The Laura Childs Grant – $200
Bloomington HS North & South

Given each year to one athlete from both North and South who has exhibited exemplary sportsmanship and citizenship and who will attend a college or university in the Fall. The candidate is to be nominated by the head coaches and the principal.

The James R. Eberly Scholarship – $340
Alternates between North & South

This award on alternates between North or South and will be awarded to a North student this year. It is given to a graduating senior who will study Fine Arts at Indiana University.  The Eberly family would be particularly pleased if the recipient is planning to eventually teach art but it is not a requirement for the scholarship award. 

Florence Hamilton Scholarship – $370
Bloomington HS North & South

This scholarship is awarded annually to a high school senior who is academically ranked in the upper third of the class and who is worthy of assistance in furthering his or her post-high school education or training. One recipient is chosen from both North and South High Schools.

The Bertha Elizabeth Rogers Hinkle Memorial Scholarship -$1,480
Bloomington HS North & South

Awarded annually to a graduating female interested in a career in retailing, merchandising or business. The candidate should excel in scholarship, leadership, and character. The recipient should have financial need and should be recommended by the school’s scholarship committee. One recipient is chosen from both North & South High Schools.

James F. & Carolyn Weir Thompson Quill and Scroll Award – $200
Alternates between North & South

This cash award is available to a sophomore or junior who has demonstrated an interest in the English language, writing and journalism. The student should have a superior attendance record. The recipient is to be selected by the journalism teachers and the principal and he/she should be attending the same high school next school year. This award alternates annually between North and South and will be awarded to a South student this year.

These recipients are nominated by MCCSC educators every school year.

Julia Beth Brabson Memorial Scholarship – $400
Bloomington High School South

Awarded annually to a band student from South to attend a summer band camp. Recipients are chosen by the band director.

The Sam Burgess Memorial Scholarship – $340
Bloomington High School South

Given annually to a promising underclassman soccer player from South to help defray a portion of the expense to attend a summer soccer camp or program. The recipient is selected by the soccer coaches and the athletic director.

The Donald Childs Medal – Medal Only
Bloomington HS North & South

Awarded at both North and South to a senior, male student participating in athletics. The recipient should have the highest cumulative rating in academic scholarship, in athletic ability, in sportsmanship, and in school citizenship. The candidate is nominated by the director of athletics and the school’s scholarship committee.

IU Credit Union and FMCCS Student Leadership Awards – $100/each
All High School Programs

These awards are to be given to graduating seniors excelling in character, leadership, and service among their peers or in the community. Particular attention is given to those students who possess leadership qualities but who do not necessarily participate in highly visible activities. The awards are co-sponsored by the Foundation of MCCS and the IU Credit Union.  Ten awards are presented annually to three students from North, three from South, two from Hoosier Hills, one from the Graduation School, and one from Bloomington New Technology High School.

The L. Jon Wertheim Journalism Award – $500.00
Bloomington High School North

This scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating journalism student at Bloomington High School North. The award was established to honor Sports Illustrated writer and Bloomington North graduate, L. John Wertheim.  The award is meant to encourage a young journalist to pursue a career in writing.

The Phoebe Crookes Whaley Memorial Award -  $220
Bloomington HS North & South

This scholarship is awarded annually to support an exceptional high school musician who would benefit from advanced study in a prestigious summer music program.  The award rotated between bank, orchestra, and voice porgrams.  One recipient will be selected collaboratively by the Music Directors at each respective high school.
